what are bcaas and why should i use them??

It is no secret that I love my BCAAs from Momsanity! They are made with no artificial sweeteners, colors, or flavors, so that’s a big win in my book! I’ve shared about them on social media and a lot of people will ask– “What are BCAAs and why should I be using them?” So today, I am answering this question! The What of BCAAs

BCAA stands from branch chain amino acids. It sounds like something from a sci-fi movie, doesn’t it?? Well here is what is in BCAAs:

Leucine:  Helps promote muscle (think lean mass) growth while assisting with fat-loss.  Also helps              suppress hunger when following a lower carbohydrate diet.

Isoleucine:  Promotes fat burning

Valine:  The energizer.  Promotes muscle endurance, blunts fatigue, helps with mental sharpness

The three amino acids work together to help keep the body chemically balanced.  The recommended ratio is 3:1:1 Leucine: Isoleucine:Valine for the most impact. Guess what? That is how Momsanity has designed their BCAAs! Score!

The Why of BCAAs

Why should you use BCAAs? Here are three great reasons from the Momsanity Blog:

  1.  They lower cortisol  levels.  Cortisol is an important stress hormone that is responsible for increasing blood sugar and aiding in protein, fat and carbohydrate metabolism – we need it in proper doses.  The problem is most of us produce way too much.  When we release cortisol along with low levels of HGH (think when you don’t get enough sleep) or high levels of insulin cortisol causes muscle burning and fat storing (not good!).  BCAAs lower cortisol and therefore help suppress cravings and hunger instigated by stress.
  2. They help regulate hunger. In addition to balancing blood sugar, the BCAA leucine activates hunger controlling molecules in the brain.
  3. They balance our brains.   BCAAs are precursors to our brain’s stimulating chemical glutamate, as well as the number one relaxation neurotransmitter (GABA). By balancing these stimulating and relaxing responses in the brain, we can stop cravings before they even start.

When should I take them?

I drink my BCAAs during my workout. I am one of those really thirsty people when I workout! It helps me to not only quench my thirst, but replenish my body as well. I’ve noticed a difference in soreness after working out when I use my BCAAs on a regular basis. Also, I like to have another cup around 1:30 or 2 PM to ward off the 3 o’clock sleepies.

How much should I take?

Momsanity recommends taking 5 grams per 50 pounds of body weight per day.  If you are extremely active then adding another 5 grams can be beneficial.  For most women who are fairly active 10 to 15 grams per day taken in 5 gram servings seems to be ideal.  The ideal scenario is taking 5 grams pre-workout, 5 grams post-workout and 5 grams when cravings are most likely to strike.

What would you recommend?

This answer is obvious, right? I will say I have never tried another brand of BCAAs but I don’t feel the need to. I really like what Momsanity has to offer and love their flavors! Cherry Lime is hands down my favorite, but the Raspberry Lemonade and Fruit Punch are also delicious.
